Many believe that chickens are the gateway to farming and I couldn't agree more.
We decided to start our flock before we broke ground on Wildwood. I purchased my first set of Brahma chicks from a breeder in North Carolina. Brahmas are a heritage breed I love. They are slow growing and beautiful. Also known as Gentle Giants, this breed has made a wonderful addition to our farm.
Meet Huckleberry and Honeysuckle!
Honeysuckle hatched out her first brood of sweet chicks.
A Majestic breed, they stroll around foraging on the farm. This breed is aesthetically pleasing, with their beautiful colors. This is a great family pet variety. Each one has their own personality. And it's true, they follow you all over, greeting you with excited clucks and sweet coos.
The Brahma hens are wonderful mothers and great egg layers. This past spring was the first time to experience a broody hen and how she so lovingly tended to her clutch of eggs.
After 21 days of waiting, I could hear chirping coming from under her. Two days later, I was greeted with seven tiny chicks chirping and running around the coop. It was a sweet sight!
She had four roos and three pullets, and they are growing so fast. Our little flock is growing, and we are enjoying the farm adventure.
I will be adding to my flock, this summer. I am looking to add a few new Brahma pullets from a new breeder. Pictures to come soon.
Enjoy your chickens!
